A Triumph of Determination: A Member of the CAF Overcomes Adversity
Just over a year and a half ago, Jane* faced doubt about her ability to pass the rigorous FORCES test, a mandatory annual assessment for all Canadian Armed Forces personnel to maintain employability. Her skepticism stemmed from the aftermath of her preventative double mastectomy in March 2022, a procedure involving the use of abdominal tissue for breast reconstruction. Despite her surgeon's optimistic timeline of two months for recovery, Jane found herself facing prolonged challenges.
Recognizing the need for specialized assistance in her preparation, Jane's physiotherapist, Shaun, of Quinn Rehab, referred her to me to aid in her conditioning for the FORCES test. From December 2022 onwards, Jane and I embarked on an intensive journey to rebuild her strength and stamina, focusing particularly on core conditioning. Together, we crafted an exercise regimen tailored to emulate the demands of the test components.
Since December of 2022, Jane and I have tirelessly worked to rebuild her overall strength and endurance, placing a significant focus on enhancing her core strength and devising an exercise regimen tailored to mirror the demands of the FORCES test. However, our journey was not without its challenges. Jane faced a sense of disconnection with her chest and abdominal surgical sites, impacting her overall core connection. Recognizing the need for specialized assistance, I referred Jane to pelvic floor physiotherapist, Laura, of Get Moving Physio, a crucial step in her journey towards reconnecting with her body.
Despite the unexpected hurdles, I remained steadfast in my belief in Jane's ability and determination to achieve her goal. I reassured her of my confidence in her capabilities and commitment.
On Friday, April 12th, I had the privilege of witnessing Jane navigate through each component of the FORCES test, surpassing her previous personal best performances. Not only did she exceed expectations, but she also achieved a ranking in the green 'Higher Health Related Fitness' category, needing only seconds of improvement to attain the Bronze category. Jane's remarkable achievement is a testament to her resilience and dedication. It has been an honor to support those who serve our nation in staying active and thriving in the game of life.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to both physiotherapists, as well as the dedicated PSP staff at CFB Borden, whose collaborative efforts played a pivotal role in Jane's journey to success. Congratulations, Jane, on a journey well-traveled!
