50% of benefits plans in Ontario have coverage for Kinesiology. Here’s how.
Does your health benefits plan include a Healthcare Spending Account (HSA)? Almost half of all plans in Canada offer such accounts, which offer flexible spending you can use to cover the services of any regulated health professional. In Ontario, that includes Kinesiologists.
That means you can visit a Registered Kinesiologist and have your HSA cover the costs.
What is a Healthcare Spending Account? It’s a type of credit or extra care package you can use to pay for or top up certain types of benefits not covered by either your group benefits or by OHIP. Typically HSAs consist of a pre-determined amount of cash available at the beginning of each benefit year, with eligible expenses covered at up to 100% within the amount available in the account.
What makes Kinesiologists eligible? Any item that qualifies for the Medical Expense Tax Credit is eligible, according to the Canada Revenue Agency. In Ontario, that includes Registered Kinesiologists.
Kinesiologists are a regulated profession in Ontario. That means services are not only covered through HSAs, but they can also be claimed as a tax credit!
The Medical Expense Tax Credit allows Canadians to claim a tax credit for any medical expenses they haven’t already been reimbursed for. The credit can be claimed for fees paid to medical practitioners – and in Ontario, because Kinesiologists are regulated, they’re considered by Revenue Canada to qualify as medical practitioners eligible to be claimed under the Medical Expense Tax Credit.
For Kinesiologists, that means not only will HSAs cover services, but anything that exceeds the HSA cap can be claimed by you as a medical expense.
Don’t have an HSA? Tell your provider it’s time.
Since 2017, the number of benefits plans in Canada offering HSAs has nearly doubled, reaching 49% in 2022. Of Canadians with a benefits plan who don’t have an HSA, 87% tell Benefits Canada they want one.
An HSA is an important part of a competitive benefits plan. Now’s the time for companies and providers to add them.
